Working and creating somewhere beneath a sprawling underground laboratory between the Queen City and the Circle City, a group of underground jazz-hop technicians called Stockboy have just issued a manifesto that addresses these turbulent times. Entitled Something in the Water, this is a work of art that is a declaration, a warning and a healing balm. Distilling all the vibes that filtered down from the confusion, anger and fear that normal above-ground society is feeling, the Stockboy project has produced a chillingly accurate portrayal of this fucked-up time in our history.

The opening track, “Bbeaches” features the trumpet of Aaron Boyle starting things off with a foreboding dread, before diving into the heart of the matter. The next 3 tracks feature the main instigators, Killa O and Boogie Bang throwing down heavy vibes. “Circa 86” is a throwback to the days when Hip-hop was experiencing its first big rage. Past the simple dance songs and before gangsta, “Circa” is all funk ass bass and Boogie Bangs smooth rhymes spitting truth.

“Daywalkers” is a dystrophic vision of how we were living out our everyday lives with the same dead-eyed soulless apathy that only an apocalyptic event can snap us out of. “Greybeard” finds the wisdom of years making sense of things and making it possible to see a hopeful and better day.

“Calm” sees Killa O and Boogie Bang applying a balm of jazzy trip-hop on the panicky and chaotic pace of the world today. “Something in the Water” is a straight-up jazz instrumental that uses the flute of Dan Barger to end things on a bright, uplifting tone. It lets us know that yeah, things are way beyond our control right now. But with clear heads, righteous hearts and the power of music, we will get through this, maybe a little bloody, but definitely unbowed.
